Friday Family History on This Day/ Meredith B. and Mary J. Sanders Martin married 160 yrs ago

While looking through many blogs in the last few months, I found one that I liked at Kentucky Kindred Genealogical Research (KentuckyKindred) called “Today In Genealogy History” by Phillis Brown. I am going to change this up a bit and do what I am going to call Friday Family History on This Day. Instead of a daily posting I will be going through my genealogy calendar on Friday and picking one event on that day. I can see this not being a weekly by-line as there will be Fridays on the calendar that will be quiet. Join me on this adventure. My first offering is below:

Mary J. Sanders is my husbands 1st cousin three times removed.
On this day, Sept 23,  in 1875 she married Meredith Benjamin Martin son of William and Anna Davis Martin. The marriage took place at the home of her parents Wade Hillard and Hannah Potter Sanders in Pike Co., Kentucky.

Meredith married a second time. I have conflicting information about Mary’s death date. So I am not sure if it was a divorce or death that brought this marriage to an end.

Isn’t that funny you solve one question only to find another!

MCCARTNEY, WILLIAM D.—Was born in Columbia County, Pa., in 1806. Being blessed with pious parents he was trained ” in the way he should go.” He made a profession of religion in the sixteenth year of his age, and joined the church of Derry, Pa., then under the pastoral care of Rev. John B. Patterson. His duty as a Christian prompted him to look forward to the gospel ministry, and in 1828 he commenced his classical studies under the direction of Rev. George Scott, pastor of Mill Creek Church, Beaver County, Pa., by whom he was introduced into Washington College, Washington, Pa., where he was graduated in 1832. He studied Theology in the Western Seminary, Allegheny City, Pa., and was licensed by Washington Presbytery, in 1835, where he was ordained and installed as pastor of West Liberty Church, Pa. He subsequently labored in the Ridge Church, Madison, and Holmesville Church, Ohio, within the bounds of Steubenville and New Lisbon Presbyteries.

He married Miss Maria J. Stewart, daughter of Mr. Thomas Stewart, of Claysville, Pa. They had five children. Mrs. McCartney and four of their children died previous to his death. He had long been afflicted, occasioned by a decline of his total powers, and he died at his residence in Columbiana County, Ohio, July 27. 1863.

J. R. Dundass, i).i)., of Sandy, Ohio, writes as follows:—”He was a man of very superior intellectual powers, logical, clear, and discriminating in his theological views, an excellent scholar, devotedly pious, a faithful and successful minister of Christ. Notwithstanding his affliction of partial and sometimes almost total blindness, he was always cheerful and social, realizing that our light afflictions which are but for a moment worketh for us a fur more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.”

William D. I believe to be the son of my 4th great grandparents Isaiah and Lettice Hudders McCartney and my 3rd great grandfathers, Samuel Craig McCartney, brother. I just wished they had stated who Williams “pious parents” where. I guess that is for another search and another day!

Eeee gads SMITH!  Yah  I am  going to venture into one of my Smith families.

This is the family that I mentioned earlier in Treasures In Letters.

Ellen Smith wife of Byron Kaye is my problem child. There are a few birth dates that have surfaced for Ellen, as it stands now we believe she was born in 1829 and was older than Byron and this might be why the contradiction in dates.

As the family story goes she lost both of her parents to small pox in 1833.  We’ve not found these records yet.  This is one of the reasons that I tried to follow Captain David Smith back to his parents, Ellen wrote in her letter,  she lived with his family after her parents died. I have found this family , but have not as of yet found Ellen living with them. I know there are many reasons why she is not found, 10 yrs between census can leave a lot of room for moving around, she may not have stayed with her cousin David all the time but maybe spent time with other families as well. She could be listed under a different name such as Helen. We add that she is a Smith from Scotland and that Smith is about as common as it is here…sigh!

This is what we do have on Ellen and her family:

1.  Byron Kaye, son of James Kaye and Hannah Halroyd,
was born on 23 Apr 1836 in Kirkburton, Yorkshire, England, was
christened on 24 Nov 1836 in Kirkburton, Yorkshire, England, and died on
6 Mar 1865 in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada at age 28. The cause of his
death was Boiler Accident.

Byron married Ellen Smith, daughter of David Smith, about 1857. Ellen was born on 4     May 1829 in Kintor, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, died on 1 May 1917 in Chicago, Cook Co., Ill. at age 87, and she was buried on 4 May 1917 in Rose Hill cemetery Chicago, Cook Co., Ill.

Children from this marriage were:

2 F     i. Margaret Fischer Kaye was born on 13 Jan 1858 in
Waterloo, Ontario, CA.
3 M    ii. David Smith Kaye was born about 1859 in Canada, died
on 17 Aug 1946 in El Paso , Texas about age 87, and was
buried on 19 Aug 1946 in  Evergreen Cemetery.
4 M   iii. Byron Kaye was born in 1860 and died on 8 Sept 1883 in
Chicago Ill. at age 23.
5 M    iv. Rev. Alexander Smith Kaye  was born on 1 Dec 1861 in Geulph,
Ontario, Canada and died on 13 Sept 1952 in Florence, Alabama
at age 90.
6 F     v. Barbara Jane Kaye  was born on 31 Mar 1863 in Woodstock On
Canada, died on 9 May 1941 in Zanesville, Muskinghum,
Co., Ohio at age 78, and Barbara is buried in Dresden ,
Muskingum Co. Ohio.
7 F    vi. Anna Gordon Kaye  was born on 3 May 1865 in Woodstock,
Ontario, CA, died on 19 Dec 1949 in Los Angles, CA at age
84, and is buried  in Forest Lawn cemetery   Los Angles,
CA..
8 M   vii. Rev. James Ross Kaye  was born on 3 May 1865 in Woodstock,
Ontario, CA, died on 12 Oct 1940 in Chicago, Ill at age
75, and is buried in Forest Home Cemetery Oak Park Ill.

Meme or not to meme/That is the question

For those who want to know what a meme is: The term Internet meme (pronounced /ˈmiːm/; meem) is used to describe a concept that spreads via the Internet. For an example, Wednesday Wedding, or Following Friday, or any of the other forms that are used as prompts in the Genealogy blogging circles.

Tonight I am going to brave it on my own, without help from a prompt. Here it goes….

While working on my family history this week I stumbled on two awesome finds.

The first one I found while visiting the Ohio Rootsweb site. I was looking through Holmes, Wayne, Knox Counties as my McCartney family have lived in all three and it is one of those cases that they really didn’t move around much, but rather the counties changed around them. While on the Holmes county page I found Holmes County Civil Court Index 1825-1900.  In the index I found Isaiah McCartney (grandfather or uncle) Samuel (grandfather) vs. Lettice McCartney (grandmother or aunt) it was in 1850 after grandfather Isaiah had passed, so most likely Isaiah was his son. As to Lettice I am not sure if it’s a sister or mom. This just makes we wonder why the two would have taken the other to court.  I will be sending off to the Holmes Country Library to get copies of the case. It sure has me  intrigued as to what when on, can’t wait to find out !

The other piece of information I found was on  Google books. I was doing a search on Google for “McCartney in Columbia Co.,PA” one of these results was a book, in which I believe I found an obituary for William D. McCartney the son of Isaiah and Lettice Hudders McCartney. The book is entitled  The Presbyterian Historical Almanac, and Annual Remembrance of the Church for 1864 by Joseph M. Wilson Volume 6. If you have ancestors in the Columbia Co. Pa during this period you might find it interesting reading even if you don’t find any family information in it.
